Computers in 2050 (or Symposium Surfing) is a computer-driven, non-linear video work that is intended for projection or streamed to the web as a live event.
Computers in 2050 (or Symposium Surfing) uses as its source footage video documentation from a symposium titled "Computers in 2050: A Good World in 2050? Will Computers Help or Hinder?" This symposium originally took place in Pittsburgh, PA, on October 19th, 2000.
In this work, a computer program endlessly selects and plays short clips from the symposium documentation. Which clips the computer chooses and in what order is determined by search inquiries at Metacrawler, an online search engine. Therefore, when this piece runs live, what people are searching for online at the moment determines the construction of the piece. The Metacrawler search inquiries appear at the bottom of the video image. When there are no matches between the online searches and the symposium documentation, applause is inserted instead.
When this piece is an installation (rather than a web cast), viewers are invited to enter their own search words on the computer interrupting the live stream of data from Metacrawler. The viewer at this point is in charge of how the video is edited. The piece reverts back to taking commands from the search engine as soon as a viewer disengages with the computer.
