A Wake-Up Vote in the House - New York Times
In a welcome rebuff to President Bush, the House has finally heeded the public’s growing fears for their liberties under the Patriot Act’s sweeping police powers. Thirty-eight Republicans joined with the Democratic minority in denying the Federal Bureau of Investigation blanket power to seize library and bookstore records in terrorism investigations. The action was needed to stop federal agents from conducting secret fishing expeditions.

Expeditions by Trevor Paglen
Several times a year I lead expeditions to view clandestine military activity. These expeditions take several forms. Some, like “San Diego is a Secret Base” and “UC Berkeley is a Secret Base” document the ways in which everyday landscapes are structured by hidden military activities. Other expeditions, like “Invisible Bases of the Basin and Range” and “Testing Ranges in the Antelope Valley” bring participants into the deep recesses of southwestern deserts to view infrastructures whose very existence is sometimes classified.

About
Brooke Singer is a digital media artist who lives in New York City. She is interested in emerging technologies not only because they are fun but also because they are contingent and malleable. She has utilized wireless communications (Wi-Fi, mobile phone cameras, RFID) to initiate discussion and positive system failures. Her work seeks to provide public access to important social issues that often are characterized as specialized or opaque. She is currently Assistant Professor of New Media at Purchase College, State University of New York, and co-founder of the art, technology and activist group Preemptive Media.
